By now Steph was used to Thor coming and going, and that he would be back when he was needed, but she still couldn't shake the strange, hollow feeling his impending departure had already left in her chest. She'd shown him around the new Avengers compound and told him about the recruits, but all she really wanted to do was give him a long, tight hug in farewell, and maybe even kiss him.
It was Bucky-leaving-for-the-war all over again. She didn't like it, but what could she do?
"I could tell Fury to save a room for you. It's not like you're not officially part of the team." Alas, Steph's bravery and recklessness did not extend to confessing her feelings to the men she liked. It was all those insecurities she'd had growing up. How could she even think that a literal god would take interest in her in any capacity other than friendship?
"No, yes, it's very nice! It's a quaint building," Thor commented, more just in case Tony was listening and could hear Thor refer to the building that way. But it was certainly a nice facility and he knew that Steph was excited to be able to be here with the recruits and get them ready for being an Avenger. And there was no one better to do so than Stephanie Rogers. He hoped she knew that. Of course she knew that, right?
She probably knew all sorts of things. Things that... didn't necessarily need to be said but were understood, right?
But if that was the case then how come he ached when he thought of leaving like he knew he had to? Or at least should. He'd had comrades before. Beautiful ones. But Steph was... different. She was soft but strong, brave but honest, all sorts of things that shouldn't be possible but were because they were her.
"And I'm sure when I come to visit I'll find a place to stay. I... I do hope that I can come visit. Often. You know. Inspire the new recruits."
"Please. And I would love to hear more of your stories." It was strange how she'd spent her youth reading stories of fantastical worlds and strange technology, only to be living it now. Still, she liked listening to Thor's tales of Asgard and his adventures in the past. She'd even sketched some of the scenes, comic book style.
Speaking of which, she actually had a little going away present for him. It wasn't like he wouldn't be back, but something about what he planned to do seemed to imply that he would be away for quite a while. Who knew how far those visions would take him?
"Hey, could you excuse me for a minute? I got you something, but I forgot to take it with me. It's back in my quarters." She'd invite him to his room if she wasn't such a bundle of nerves. She didn't want to mess up their friendship by acting on something one-sided.
"Oh, yes, of course. Go get it and I'll be right here. Not leaving just
yet," he said, giving a bit of a chuckle and a smile. The "just yet" tugged
at his heart a bit, both because he would be leaving these comrades in
general but Rogers in particular. They shared a bond that had been forged
by the test of battle as well as... something else. He couldn't quite be
sure of what it was, too delicate to put a name to it yet but it was
there and he felt it keenly.
Only he wasn't sure if she felt it as well. It was hard to tell at times
because she was so kind and nice to everyone. So much sincerity and warmth
that was a part of who she is that he was afraid to mistake it for
something more.
It didn't take long for Steph to return with a sketchbook the size of a paperback. It wasn't very thick, but its pages were filled with her drawings of Thor. There was some sort of story to most of them, though others were just snapshots of his time with the Avengers. Each one had been drawn with care.
She wasn't in any of the sketches, though. If she was, it was just her back, or the shield, or her hand. She never liked drawing herself. She wasn't very comfortable with photos either, but she sucked up the press appearances and the selfies people on the street sometimes asked of her.
"Here." Her cheeks were noticeably flushed as she held out the sketchbook to him. "Just... a little something. To remember me by." In case he takes a while to return. In case he doesn't return.
