Eventually, even Bucky had to look away, groaning as he let his forehead fall to the pillow just beside Steph's head. Every time she told him to go harder or faster he did exactly as he was told. Putting Steph first was so ingrained into him that he even managed to keep doing just that in the middle of their first time in bed together.
But it wasn't like he wasn't absolutely getting his own pleasure out of it, as was evident in his ragged breathing and the way he also kept moaning her name, how much he loved her, and various curses. Bucky felt like he could keep going forever, but also like he was going to come at any moment at the same time, even though he was trying to hold himself back.
It was everything Bucky had been waiting for. During the war, before his original capture, he'd even decided that the second he got home, once it was done, he was going to confess to her and probably even propose then and there. He might be late, but he was finally done with the wars, and he had confessed, alright. The proposing, he decided, could wait for a while, though. Steph had enough to adjust to already.
Even though he wasn't physically tired, Bucky had his own sweat building up as he let out another groan. "Sweetheart, I don't know how much longer I'm gonna last."
"It's okay," Steph panted. She'd already had two orgasms and a hell of a good time, so she wasn't about to complain not getting off yet again. Bucky hadn't had his chance though, and she'd been selfish enough already.
She slid her hand from his hip to his back, bony fingers digging into his flesh, while her other hand was at the back of his head, gripping his hair. Burying her face against his shoulder, she coaxed, "Come for me, darling," then ground her hips to help him along.
She should probably not have been surprised that moving together in those last moments brought her to her peak too, but somehow she was, and she ended up biting into his shoulder as she cried out in ecstasy. Oops. She'd apologize for it later once she came down from her high.
Everything Steph did towards the end combined to push Bucky over the edge. He let out a loud groan as his hips stuttered, his thrusts no longer steady as he began to come hard, the condom the only thing keeping him from filling her directly.
It wasn't until his orgasm finally began to wane that he was able to form words at all. "Fuck, Steph. Baby," he all but whimpered against her ear. "I love you so much, sweetheart. Always have."
Once he came down from that high, Bucky rolled onto his side, pulling Steph along so he could hold her tightly against himself and not crush her tiny body under his weight. His heart was pounding hard against his ribs, he was breathing heavy, and he couldn't be more thrilled about what the two of them had finally done.
Feeling light-headed after all that excitement, Steph let Bucky roll them over, one leg once more coming to rest along his side. She was out of breath, and her heart felt like it wanted to burst out of her chest; fleetingly, she thought that it wouldn't actually be an awful way to die.
"I love you so much," she returned when she could finally speak. She placed a hand on his cheek. "Thank you for choosing me."
It wasn't like he hadn't been spoilt for choice. He had dated some of the prettiest girls in their neighborhood, and later he was in the Army and making his way across Europe. Then he even had Cap, who had everything he loved about Steph, just better. Steph was so desperate for his affections that she had been willing to be the substitute and play house with him until Cap changed her mind and came back, but he chose to be with her tonight. It meant so much to her that he did.
She sniffed suddenly, pulling her hand back to swipe the back of it on her eyes. "S-Sorry. I'm okay. I just..." She felt the sting of tears in her eyes. "I just wanted to be with you so badly."
Bucky shifted a bit, propping himself up on one elbow so he could look down at Steph seriously, and placed a hand on her cheek. He gently rubbed away the wetness under one eye with the pad of his thumb. "Stephanie Grace Rogers, I want you to listen to me," he started, his voice soft and caring but firm. "I've been in love with you for more than three times as long as you've been alive." She was, in fact, only twenty-five, after all. "There was no choice. I just am, and I always have been. I told you, it was gonna be you or no one. I meant that.
Sighing, he lowered his head so he could press his lips to her forehead in a soft kiss. "I haven't so much as thought about being with anyone but you, Steph. The dates were just so people would get off my back about being single, or cause I was helping someone else. Remember Hazel and Midge? I dated them back-to-back." Bucky perked a brow and paused for a moment, letting her think back to the women he'd seen in their early twenties. "They were a couple and their parents were starting to question why they weren't seeing any guys."
Steph sniffed, but nodded. "It's still just a little hard to believe, that's all." Bucky had been a dream that was always so close yet so far, then the war came and took away any chance she thought she might've had with him. While she was trying to find a way to the front lines for him, she hadn't be expecting anything in return if she was successful. If anything, they would at least die together. That would've been enough.
Now she had this. He was back, and he was hers. She tugged him down so she could kiss him again, smiling against his lips. "No more fighting, okay?" Surely the future had found a way to stop wars, or at least nations didn't need to forcibly send their men to battle anymore. There was still the matter of the trial, but as he'd said, Cap had friends. They would find a way. "We're home now."
It was the weirdest concept of home like, ever, but she would take it.
"Yeah, I don't want to fight anymore. I keep getting sucked into shit-" by a certain someone, mostly, "-but I don't want that life. Not if I've got you here waiting for me."
There was a warm smile as Bucky shifted back onto his side again, then pulled one of the pillows over his metal arm before he tugged his girl close. He wanted her as comfortable as possible and didn't feel like rolling over her, so hopefully the pillow would help.
"We're home now, yeah," he said softly. "Cause my home is wherever you are. I don't care where I live, I just want you with me."
"And I don't care when," Steph said, snuggling into him. The exhaustion of the day's events was beginning to sink in, and Bucky's body was warm and comfortable, like a large human blanket. It wouldn't take long, really, before sleep would claim her.
"I love you so much," she mumbled, eyes closing. Her chest still heaved as she caught her breath, but it wasn't in an alarming way like when she'd have an asthma attack or a severe allergic reaction. She clutched at him almost as if she was afraid to be ripped away by some weird time thing or, worse, Cap herself. Maybe she was.
She was asleep before even hearing anything he might've said in answer.
Bucky didn't fall asleep quickly, exactly, but he did fall asleep faster than he normally did. And while he still had nightmares, they weren't the usual ones that involved his violent past, or anything else that led to how often he woke up swinging. Instead, they were the sorts of nightmares that just had Steph - both the tall and short versions of her - abandoning him over and over. Then, occasionally, Bucky would jolt awake just enough to realize that his arms were definitely wrapped around the tiny version of Steph, and he'd manage to drift off to sleep again, soothed in the knowledge that he didn't imagine everything that happened between them.
Somehow, Bucky even managed to stay in bed for an entire night. That in itself was a feat. But, once he woke up he spent a few minutes just watching her sleep in the soft morning light before his bladder forced him out of bed. He carefully dislodged himself, doing his best not to wake Steph as he got up, then quietly crossed the hall to grab some clean, comfortable clothes from the guest room he'd been staying in.
After cleaning himself up a bit in the bathroom, getting clothes on, and even digging out a spare toothbrush that he'd spotted in one of the drawers for Steph, he made his way to the kitchen and stared into the fridge. The problem was, Bucky didn't know a lot about cooking. But he was pretty sure he could at least fry a couple of eggs and make some toast for her, so that's what he started trying to do.
Steph, meanwhile, dreamed she was back in her apartment in the 40s, sitting on the bed and trying to sketch while Bucky ate her out. It was definitely this Bucky though, as she was drawing those dark metal fingers clamped around her thigh.
She woke up wet and sore, which was the strangest combination. Groaning, she slowly got out of bed. She needed to clean herself up, but she felt compelled to look for Bucky instead, and she found herself praying that it hadn't all been a dream.
That was how she ended up in the kitchen, wrapped in a blanket and hobbling somewhat, her hair a disheveled mess and her neck sporting several love marks. She looked absolutely relieved to find him there.
"Morning," she greeted shyly, embarrassed for thinking he might have abandoned her. "I... I can finish that, just gimme a minute to wash up."
Bucky turned to look at Steph before she spoke, his hearing better than it was in her time and worlds better than her own was. She looked beautiful, even messy and wrapped in a blanket. "It's fine, I can handle eggs and toast," he said, smiling as he set down the spatula.
It took no time at all for him to cross the room, then lean down and press his lips to hers in a soft kiss. "Morning, sweetheart." He stood back upright then, keeping his eyes on her the whole time. "You can take your time getting cleaned up. I even found a fresh toothbrush for you since I thought it might be weird to use hers."
Looking down at his best friend, messy and covered in hickeys and still groggy, Bucky felt a lightness in himself that he hadn't felt in literal decades. It was like one of the larger weights he'd been carrying on his shoulders had been lifted off of him.
Bucky calling Steph sweetheart in the light of day felt different. More... real, not just a byproduct of alcohol or emotions gone haywire or whatever. It also made all that they did last night more precious. It had been real. He didn't just sleep with her because his Steph wasn't around and she was the next best thing.
"Thank you, darling," she said, blushing. She never imagined the time would come when they would call each other by those ridiculously sweet names. Sure they did last night, but the occasion called for it. Now though, in the midst of something as mundane as getting ready for breakfast? Again, it felt real. "I won't take too long. Can't let the food get warm after you took the trouble make them."
Three things held her up: the marvel that was the hot water tap, finding something to wear, and not finding curlers (Cap had a multi-styler and dryer in the bathroom, not that Steph recognized it or knew what it was). The shirts were fine, she just had to continue wearing them as dresses. But Cap's panties were too loose. Which was a shame, since they were nice and probably expensive.
She could almost ignore the soreness by the time she returned to the kitchen, but then she had to get seated, and Cap had high chairs by the counter. Groaning, she managed with a little more difficulty than the day before. She flashed him a sheepish smile when he asked if she was okay.
"Just sore," she admitted, turning pink in the cheeks again. There had been a little bleeding, but she'd expected that. Embarrassed at what she had to ask next, she picked up the weird hammer-shaped paperweight and fidgeted with it so she didn't have to look at him. "Can we... can we go shopping later? I just need some, um, panties." She'd hand washed the one she'd been wearing and hung it up in the bathroom, but it would take a few hours to dry.
Bucky watched Steph for a moment when she said she was just sore, then gave her a nod as he plated up their eggs and toast covered in a plum jam he found in the fridge. It seemed like she was telling the truth, at least, but it had been a long time since he'd had to watch Steph for her health signs. He set the plates on the counter in front of their chairs, then got them each a cup of coffee.
"Yeah, we can go shopping. I'm pretty sure you need more than just that," he said before pressing a kiss to her head and taking the seat beside her. "As long as you try not to pay attention to price tags. Inflation or whatever it is is insane and it makes everything look expensive." Bucky picked up his piece of toast and used it to gesture towards the bag of bread lying on the counter. "That bread's probably like three dollars," he added before taking a bite. "It's crazy and I hate it, but we can afford clothes and shoes and everything else you need anyway, even with the ridiculous prices."
Despite the warning, Steph nearly choked on her coffee. "Three dollars?" What the hell. She looked around the apartment. It was so nice, which of course begged the question: "How was she able to afford all this?" And that bank account balance had been no joke either.
She started on her toast, and while she didn't rip into it as Cap would've done, she was still famished from all the action last night and ate quickly enough. "I'm gonna need to find work," she said when she finally had a moment. "I dunno how to do that though. I mean, I can't just use her identity can I? That seems... wrong." Unfair too, because there were many things Cap could do that she couldn't, and people would expect that of her if she was Stephanie Rogers. But it wasn't like she could just change her name and be done with it, right?
Bucky couldn't help laughing softly. He got it, though. The differences in prices from the past to now was absolutely ridiculous. Hell, back then $3 would have covered a week's worth of groceries, not just the bread. "I don't know, sixty-something years of back pay from the Army plus a high profile government job probably helped pay for all this," he said, shrugging a shoulder. Bucky didn't actually know if she did anything beyond that. He could probably look into it though.
"We'll figure it out, though. It'll be fine." He leaned over to press a kiss to the side of her head before adding, "Worst case I know where we can go live in a shack and help tend goats."
He was teasing. Sort of. He did know of that place, but he also knew of Steph's allergies. Goats were probably on the allergy list.
Either way, he sat back up and dug into his own plate, which held at least three times as much food as Steph's did.
"That doesn't sound too bad," Steph said with a laugh. Goats! She'd never had a pet because of her allergies, so it was a pretty interesting prospect, even though it meant being covered in goat shit. "As long as I get to do it with you." That was the important part. She wasn't picky, and they'd already lived through tougher times.
She finished her plate and watched him continue to eat while sipping her coffee. She'd noticed how much food he'd started with, but figured he was also just famished from the night before. Reminded of that, she felt herself grow warm. "Um, thank you for last night, by the way." It had already been a dream come true to lose her virginity to him, but it had also just been really hot sex.
"It's... different," Bucky said with a chuckle. "There's no power. Or indoor plumbing. I got used to it, though. It's where I was staying before I... disappeared for five years." If nothing else, Bucky thought it would be amusing to see tiny Steph try to deal with the goats for a day or so. They were absolute menaces, but so was she.
When she thanked him, however, he finished the bite he was eating and dropped his fork so he could turn to face her fully. "Sweetheart," smiling softly, he reached over to place his good hand on her cheek. "You do not have to thank me for the best night of my life." It would be difficult for him to decide what the worst night of his life was, but the best one? The night before won by a mile.
Steph leaned into Bucky's touch and smiled back up at him, glad to know that she made him happy. Especially after everything else that happened the day before, between Cap leaving and thinking about the trial and finding that evil red book. She was also glad to know that she was good enough to fill the other Steph's shoes, even if it just came to him.
"It was mine too." She pinked a little more as she added with a soft laugh, "I can still feel everything." God, she was so sore. It was a good kind of sore though. And she liked what she saw in the mirror earlier, hair a mess and neck covered in hickeys. She didn't normally like looking at herself.
Bucky smiled as he leaned forward to kiss Steph. It wasn't a heated kiss, but he let it linger, enjoying the fact that he could kiss her like he'd always wanted to. When he pulled back, the smile was still there.
"I wasn't, uh, too rough or anything, was I?" he asked, shifting so he could look over the visible parts of her skin. He didn't think he bruised her or anything--aside from the obvious marks along the side of her neck, but he had to admit he liked those--but it gave him a good excuse to look her over again. And Bucky had always liked what he'd seen when he looked at Steph Rogers.
When she wasn't sick or injured, at least.
"We probably should go get you some clothes today, though, huh?"
"No, you were a perfect gentleman." Steph being in love with him aside, she couldn't have had a better first time than with Bucky. He was so thoughtful of her needs the whole time, which was unlike what she heard about men when it came to sex.
Then, unable to really hold back her mouth especially around him, she blurted out, "I think it'll be hot if you were though. Just a little. I can take it." Her blush had darkened and was starting to spread down to her neck, but she wasn't exactly embarrassed. Now that they were together they could talk about their filthy fantasies of each other, right?
Or the fact that she was only wearing a shirt right now. "Yeah, we probably should. I'm literally wearing nothing underneath this shirt," Steph said with a laugh. It was nice and warm in the apartment at least. And, well, Bucky was practically a human blanket, now more than ever considering how much bigger he was.
Bucky couldn't help laughing softly at her request. "All you gotta do is tell me what you want or need and I'll do it." There wasn't much he wouldn't do for her, but he'd always been that way. But she was right, it did sound sort of hot. He probably wouldn't do anything particularly rough unless she asked him to, though. Too much of his life had been focused on protecting her.
But then she was telling him about the lack of anything she had on under that shirt and Bucky groaned softly as he looked her over again. "I mean, I know I wouldn't mind you walking around here in next to nothing or less all the time, but I'm pretty sure you're actually gonna want to leave the apartment every once in a while." She had a whole world of the future to explore, after all.
"You know that goes the other way around too, right?" It felt a little weird to be giving each other shit when it came to most things, but to be much softer, much sweeter, more sensual in the bedroom. It was a nice kind of weird though. At the very least it was a reminder that they weren't just best of friends; they were lovers now, too. "I'll blow you or ride you any time of the day, just say the word."
Apparently Steph wasn't as averse to talking about sex as Bucky might've thought. Her perceived lack of interest in the past was really just because she hadn't wanted to do it with anyone but him.
"You'll help me pick out what to buy? I dunno what the current fashion is like, and you know I can't see colors well." While she knew she had trouble seeing colors, it was really still an abstract concept to her. Her vision had colors just fine, but there had been instances when Bucky or someone else had told her the colors of her clothes clashed or something like that. From what little she'd seen, the future had more colors to work with.
It really was a surprise to Bucky how easily she discussed sex, but it wasn't exactly a bad one. He'd never been much of one for talking about it with his buddies when they were younger, either, and it had been because he was pretty much waiting for her. While his classmates and coworkers back then had wanted to jump into bed with as many women as they could, Bucky was content to wait for one in particular.
And wait he sure as shit did.
"I'll remember that," he said to her offer. "But so far I think making you feel good is my favorite part." Hell, Bucky had always gone out of his way to help her or make her happy. Seeing her smile had always been one of his favorite things.
"Outside of pointing out colors, I don't know how much help I'll be with clothes. But I'll try, alright?" He almost suggested calling Nat to help her pick out clothes, then remembered there was no more Nat. Maybe Wanda? She seemed like an alright--if angry--kid at the airport.
Jesus, Bucky really didn't know many people.
But the mention of her color blindness made him think of something. "There's also walk-in eye doctors now. I've seen them around. Maybe we can stop by one of those while we're out. See how soon we can get you some new glasses so you can actually see what New York is like now."
"Really?" Just when Steph thought Bucky couldn't get any hotter. Her more experienced classmates and later on coworkers often lamented about their sexual partners' self-serving attitudes, but apparently she not only got the man who waited for the woman he loved, he also enjoyed making her feel good. "I'm easy though. Just... do what you did last night." His mouth was probably her favorite, but she wasn't going to say no to whatever he felt like doing. She wanted him to feel good too.
"Well, if you like them, then maybe they're good?" Brands were never something she particularly thought about, but she could get nitpicky about quality and would invest in certain essential pieces. Today's prices might give her an asthma attack though. Hence the approach of, if he thought she looked good in those clothes, then they were probably good.
She honestly had no idea what she was missing in terms of her vision, but if he thought there was something more to see, she believed him. "Should I start getting ready now?" She glanced out the window, then squinted because she couldn't see that far out. It was maybe fall? She hadn't actually taken a good look at the date in all of yesterday's excitement.
"Yeah, really." Bucky grinned as he watched her, then reached his hand out to tuck a piece of her hair behind her ear. He just wanted an excuse to touch her. "I always put you first, sweetheart. Why wouldn't it be the same for our sex life?" Hell, the fact that the two of them had a sex life was amazing enough to him. He'd only spent, what, ninety years wanting to share that with her?
"I'll probably think you look beautiful no matter what you try on. But I'll do my best, alright?" Hell, he didn't even put much thought into his own clothes. Layers for warmth, and make them comfortable and not stand out too much. And the not standing out part was more for safety than anything. Getting recognized in public didn't exactly go well for him.
Bucky chuckled at her squinting, though. More for the timing than anything else, since he'd just mentioned glasses. "Yeah, we're getting your eyes checked," he stated, no longer really a question. "If you want to go ahead and get ready we can do that. Things you don't need to try on--like, I don't know, curlers and toiletries or whatever-- I can just order that stuff online and get them delivered, so I guess we could just focus on clothes for now."

But it wasn't like she could just change her name and be done with it, right?

"We'll figure it out, though. It'll be fine." He leaned over to press a kiss to the side of her head before adding, "Worst case I know where we can go live in a shack and help tend goats."
He was teasing. Sort of. He did know of that place, but he also knew of Steph's allergies. Goats were probably on the allergy list.
Either way, he sat back up and dug into his own plate, which held at least three times as much food as Steph's did.

"It was mine too." She pinked a little more as she added with a soft laugh, "I can still feel everything." God, she was so sore. It was a good kind of sore though. And she liked what she saw in the mirror earlier, hair a mess and neck covered in hickeys. She didn't normally like looking at herself.
